my filmic intent: The F Stop Series.
The F Stop Series is a sequence of independent digital movies and film projects that play with the perception of their respective mediums during the digital revolution.
In the crafting of these movies, the most influence is drawn from Baroque philosophy; in that, the story will exist within metaphor to exhume the psychological suffering of Man.
Ideals of Romanticism, which emphasizes intuition, imagination, and feeling, are also key.
I also derive influence from the 'wabi-sabi' and 'mono no aware' concepts as stipulated in Remodernism.
The F Stop Series bases itself around a single outlying concept: one must begin to think of the camera as not a simple recorder of event but as an aperture to interior movement. There is a two-handed approach to this. On one hand is the concept's direct relationship between the cinema and the spectator; the movie acts simply as a middleman between the enlightenment (or illumination of thought that may be achieved), and the audience member. This enlightenment may occur based on the arousal of thought during the viewing of the movie, or by simple emotive reaction. On the other hand is the concepts execution within the movie itself: the action of the movie, as it were, is not in fact acted upon screen in an explicit way, but takes place below the surface of the frame; that is to say, the story arc is completely contingent on the thoughts, realizations, inner conflicts, or motivations of the characters. This aperture also relates to Peter Wollens concept of an open aperture film; a film that is not self contained, and holds many real world references or breaks the fourth wall, thereby disrupting the spoon feeding of the audience common with ordinary cinema.
Because there is such close concentration on the interior, the F Stop Series movies are almost exclusively reliant on the mental work of the audience, and are more closely related to visual essays than narrative films.
The goal of the F Stop Series is to bring about a return to intellectualized spectatorship in cinema; to inspire discussion, provoke thought, stir dialectics, and above all to arouse aesthetic catharsis.
3 basic ideas:
-[enlightenment of audience by thought or emotion]
-[story arc is internalized within the characters]
-[disruption of consumptive spectatorship]
